Charleston Coliseum Charleston, SC 18-19 Omni Atlanta, GA o "How can I get tickets and how much will they cost?" U.S. venues' ticket sales (for currently announced dates) are being handled by TicketMaster (contact your local outlet for more specific information on given dates). The dates seem to be going on sale sporadically (as of 5/18 Miami and Philadelphia had been announced) so be alert for radio announcements in your area, and for postings on rec.music.rem (again, don't ask over and over -- if someone knows, they will most likely post the information on their own if they're going to at all). Keep in mind that TM outlets often are not aware of a show until a few days befope tickets go on sale -- so don't panic if they say they don't know anything about a show you see listed above. Ticket prices vary depending on the venue, location of seats, and the TM charges; however, be prepared to pay anything from $25-$50 per ticket if you get them through TM. Sold-out shows may be *very* expensive to get tickets for and will probably require your going through one of those dreaded ticket agents and paying premium prices and service charges. But don't give up all hope -- some newsgroups members have posted that tickets (usually singles, sometimes in very good locations) have been found right up until the day of the show (and even that at some shows, desperate scalpers have only been asking face value or less for tickets as the concert begins.) o "Will Fan Club members be receiving any special deals on tickets, preferential seating, discounts, special shows, passes, parties, tips about unannounced small club appearances, etc.?" No. o "What is URL for the Warner Brothers WWW page (which includes an *incomplete* list of tour dates and the downloadable _Monster_ promo)?" It is . Note that this site is constantly growing and expanding, so it might be down at times while upgrades are being performed. It now also includes some Quick- Time videos taken from the "Nightswimming," "Crush with Eyeliner," and other clips on the new compilation _Parallel_. o "Who will be opening for R.E.M.?" Sonic Youth opened up the first half of the North American dates (thru 5/30 at Minneapolis's Target Center), and Luscious Jackson will open the remainder of the dates. European dates will be opened by a variety of bands, depending on the specific date. Some bands mentioned so far include The Cranberries, Belly, PJ Harvey, Blur, Radiohead, Sleeper, and Oasis. o "Will R.E.M. be playing any songs *not* from their last three albums?" The band has stated in interviews they will be performing minimally from their pre-_Green_ body of work. However, in their first month of touring, they included "Finest Worksong," "Begin the Begin," "Disturbance at the Heron House," "Welcome to the Occupation," and "It's the End of the World..." (see also the set lists below). They have also thrown in "So. Central Rain" in a couple of sets (though, sadly, recognition of this song was said to be quite low among concert attendees), and have performed "Fall on Me," as well. Peter Buck told MTV's Tabitha Soren in a recent interview that R.E.M. were working up another 10 or 15 items so that shows' setlists will eventually be much more varied than they have been during these very early stages of the tour -- so that fans coming to consecutive nights of the tour will see different shows. Interestingly, the band has mentioned plans to record some of the new songs on the road (not "live" in concert, but backstage, in rehersal rooms, etc.) as their next album. (See also the last question below.) The cover songs reported as of this writing are versions of Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman" (made famous by Glen Campbell), and Chris Isaac's "Wicked Game." An as yet unconfirmed report states that at least Buck and Stipe made an impromptu attempt in Tokyo (2/1) at covering Hole's "Doll Parts," until Stipe ran out of lyrics he knew. Michael Stipe has also slipped a few of his trademark introductory acapella bits before some tunes. Identified so far have been the chorus of Tori Amos' song "Winter" ("When you gonna make up your mind, when you gonna love you as much as I do...?") and Dobie Gray's "Drift Away" ("Give me the beat, boys, and free my soul.... I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away..."). o "What were the setlists for the shows on the Tour?" End of the World Martin Hoyt has been posting interesting analyses of all the setlists that folks have shared to the newsgroup so far. Email him directly for more specific information about his analysis. o "Is 'Revolution' a cover of the Beatles' song?" No. It is an original R.E.M. song that did not make it onto the album _Monster_ (in concert, Stipe has been joking "It wasn't good enough for the record, but it's good enough for live.") See the fables@lynchburg.edu server for its lyrics ("SENDME LYRICS.OTHER"). The songs "Departure" (called by some posters "Motorcycle Hero" in posts) and "Undertow" (see postings about Salt Lake on 5/23 on rec.music.rem for its first appear- ance) are also new songs. Other song titles that Buck mentioned to be in soundcheck/rehearsal stage of development include "Swamp" and "Away" (though, of course, those could be working titles for "Undertow and "Departure," now that I think about it...) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Questions, comments, suggestions, and requests for the full/regular FAQ list, to: Ron Henry . ============================================================================
