INTRO:~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello, everyone! This is our second newsletter and I am
very proud of it!!! I just felt like this once-small group of 11
or so was so lost (as the co-founder, I felt a lack of presence,
energy and ideas..). and now, ideas are stemming from everywhere,
mostly from Lin, Laura, and Christina. Then, it felt like I was
doing nothing but keeping track of members, so I decided to take
part and write this spiffy page for you!!! Read on...

ARGUMENTATIVE STATES:~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was a little disagreement about what we should and
should not include in the OICM3H, as in new ideas for articles. I
volunteered to write an article reviewing past releases of R.E.M.
and focusing on lyric interpretations for others who had not heard
those releases yet, and for a fresh perspective on the CD/LP/tape
for those who had. I asked Lin about it and she brought to my
attention, as did Laura and Christina, that the lyrics were almost
all contributed by Michael and we want to keep this mostly about
and for Mike Mills and Mike Mills fans. I agreed but was a tad
reluctant and understandably beat. Now there is a new idea!...
(drum roll, please...)

DISCUSSION GROUPS:~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This should be a great tool to branch out the
organization!!!! Courtesy of Lin, it would be a few informal
groups of OICM3H members and would primarily consist of members
who would like to "discuss" certain topics...for example...

                    A SAMPLE DISCUSSION GROUP
*******************************LIN********************************
                          Facilitator for
                 Environmental Activism and Issues

(This is just one possible idea - there are many others)

We feel this is one way for small numbers of people to connect
with one another in a safe way through discussions on a subject of
interest to them. The way we see it working is one person
volunteers to be contact, coordinator, or facilitator for a topic.
They notify Lin (erwright@uga.cc.uga.edu) who announces the new
group by e-mail to all members. Please let Lin know if you are
a subscriber but not member and want to be notified of any new
discussion groups as they are formed or if you are a member who
does not want notices). People who are interested in joining the
discussion should contact the coordinator directly. The
discussion group will communicate through widespread e-mail.
Subsequent issues of the OICM3H News will have a list of current
discussion groups, the contact person, and a brief summary of the
discussion submitted by the coordinator.

******************************************************************

JUST INQUIRY...~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
...Did anyone else think that Mike wrote Old Man Kensey
based on the interview CD, "Shiny Chatty People? I got his and
Michael's voices mixed up. To make matters worse, around that
same time I made another mistake. I was discussing "Lightnin'
Hopkins" with someone and mentioned Mike's jazzy bass performance
there. I compared it to "Mike's" bass performance of "Drive" at
the MTV Music Video Award and she informed me that Mike did not
play bass there live; he played keyboards. I felt so foolish just
then. Did anyone else make such a mistake?

LITTLE POLL OF SORTS:~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1- What song do you think carries Mike Mills' best bass
performance?

2- What instrument do you think he plays the best? If not bass,
which song does he best exemplify the talent with that instrument?

3- What song do you think has the best backup or lead performance
of Mike's?

4- Do you like Mike most because he is so down-to-earth, because
he has so much talent, or for some other reason?

5- What album do you think Mike Mills is most prominent in?

6- If you met Mike, and he asked your opinion on his flashy
"nudie suits", what would you say? Would you be lying in saying
so?

= Please reply to Christina (poetmuse@aol.com) -- I'm losing my
e-mail soon -- by early May!!! =? =)

A LITTLE PIECE OF STORY~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was re-listening to the Smashing Pumpkins CDs (IMHO,
Gish is better than Siamese Dream) and wondering how Mike got to
compose some piano for that beautiful piece in Siamese Dream in
the song "Soma." I then scoured the credits and thanks in the
sleeve for Siamese Dream and noticed a thanks for Microwave.
Microwave is often given credit for R.E.M. assistance, too, AND
Billy and Co. recorded Siamese Dream in Atlanta, GA, so maybe
Microwave was working with Smashing Pumpkins and he suggested Mike
do a piano "score" for "Soma." Or maybe Billy and James are
closet Mike fans and should join OICM3H!!! =) It's all just a
theory...

GOOD-BYE~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don't think I'll be around for the next issue of
OICM3H News, so this is probably good-bye (sniff!). I will stay
in touch by snail mail. I will be back on the net within a year
or so -- so be on the lookout... I'll look for OICM3H... or
revive it if it has become dissipated... but many of you will
probably have gone on to bigger and better things after college!
Like life!!! Good luck to grads of this and next year, and see
the rest in a few hundred days (500-600). Hopefully by then,
OICM3H will be a huge presence in rec.music.rem and elsewhere in
cyberland. Or maybe not. Who knows what the future holds.
Thanks for paying tribute to Mike by joining us.
                                                               -j*

                      LAURA'S ADMINISTRATIVE B.S.

Springtime greetings, everyone, and welcome to the second issue of
OICM3H's beloved publication, "OICM3H News." Before you skip over
this column because of the "boring-ness" of the title, I promise
to keep it short and sweet and to the point, so please, I beg of
you, keep reading! :)

First, I'd like to extend a warm welcome to all of the new members
who have joined us since the first issue, and send a friendly
hello to all of you returning "old-timers." I hope you enjoy this
issue of "OICM3H News" as much as you did the first one (maybe
even more?!), and please feel free to give the editors (Lin,
Christina [a.k.a. Poetmuse,] and myself) your input and/or
submissions. Again, this is a publication done for members by
members, so please don't hesitate to share whatever's on your
mind! With the possible start of the U.S. leg of the tour coming
up in just a couple weeks, I'm looking forward to seeing some
first-hand concert experiences gracing our pages, since I'm one of
the "unlucky" southeasterners whose area of the country seems to
have been "accidentally" left off of the tour schedule! ;)

And now for the short, sweet, and boring stuff:
    1. To all of you college students out there: summer is just
a page turn away on the calendar (yes, I stole the phrase from a
lemonade commercial), so please be sure to send any email address
changes to Lin if you won't be on campus for an extended period of
time. The next issue of "OIMC3H News" will be sent on or about
May 22, so please notify ASAP if you'll be "gone" by then.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO EVERYONE:
Be sure to read Lin's comments in the "Editor's Comments" section
regarding an alternative means of receiving "OICM3H News" this
summer if you won't have access to email.

Also, I would like to offer a big "CONGRATULATIONS!" to all of you
"college kids" who're going to be graduating!! Good luck with
career, travel, grad school, or wherever else the river may take
you.

   2. If you haven't already, check us out on the Halcyon R.E.M.
Home Page! Each "OICM3H News" is posted there in its entirety.
The address to Halcyon is http://www.halcyon.com/rem/index.html.

That's all, folks! That wasn't so bad now, was it? ;)

I will close with a wish on behalf of all of us: we'd like to
wish R.E.M. and the rest of the gang the best of luck with the
U.S. tour! If some/all of the dates need to be cancelled, we'll
be a little upset, but it means so much more to have *all four*
members of R.E.M. around and makin' good music for years to come,
providing memories and soundtracks for our lives.

Finally, let me say that I'll be "reachable" by email until
approximately May 15, 1995, as I will be joining the "graduating-
ones" after then and will be email-less for a while. I will,
however, still be here in spirit and in snail mail! Thanks,
everyone, for making Jamie's and my small dream a success. Thanks
to our combined strength, we WILL Catapult Mike Mills into Musical
History!

With all that said, Happy Spring Everyone! See you next
issue.....

                 :) Laura (laura.k.wimbrow@cyber.widener.edu)

                              OPINIONS

Greetings all! Welcome to the opinion page. This is the place
where we can discuss ideas and other interesting tidbits about
Mike. Last month I sent out a question pertaining to "favorite
bass or piano part" and would like to thank everyone who sent me
their replies. A couple of you also mentioned your favorite vocal
take as well, and I've included those too. Happy reading!

FAVORITE BASS LINE
An overwhelming number of you stated that your favorite bass
line would have to be something on Murmur, with "Radio Free
Europe" and "Pilgrimage" getting the most mentions. The run-up
on "Radio" was especially memorable to a lot of you. Here's what
Trish had to say, "when I heard Murmur for the first time, I quit
playing the acoustic guitar like a six-string, and just played all
the bass parts with the top 4 strings. By the 2nd or 3rd
listening of Reckoning I had purchased a bass and a cheap amp."
Another nod must go to the song "Lightnin' Hopkins" off
of Document. People were very persuasive about this song in
particular--Heather has this to say, "After listening to
"Lightnin' Hopkins" I realize how much of a funk rock (song) it is
and how hard it is to play. It makes me admire his playing even
more." And Jamie seemed to sum it up when she said, "It's so
upbeat and jazzy. It, in my opinion, lights up the whole song
like a disco ball in a night club."
Other songs favored were; "Bang and Blame," "Exhuming
McCarthy," "Rotary Ten," and "Texarkana."

FAVORITE PIANO PART
There seems to be no doubt among us MEM fans, because
"Nightswimming" received the most mentions. Laura had this to
offer, "That song is just perfect, a rare example of when the gods
of music possess the souls of musicians and create something that
is beyond the scope of notes on a piece of paper. Everything just
fits in that song, and Mike's keyboards are certainly no
exception."
My personal favorite is "World Leader Pretend," because his
playing in that song adds such a moving dynamic to it. Other
votes went to: "Winged Mammal Theme", "Shaking Through", "I Don't
Sleep, I Dream", and Patrick said "he would die for the (Smashing)
Pumpkins' song "Soma," on which Mike plays piano."

FAVORITE VOCAL
Since some of you offered this along with the original
question I decided to include it here. If any of you wish to add
your voice to this thread, please feel free to e-mail me with your
answer. Maybe we could have something like, Fave Vocal 2-the
sequel. Okay?
"Texarkana" was mentioned quite frequently, along with
"Boxcars," "Wolves, Lower," "Half A World Away" and Mike's semi-
solo in "Fall On Me." I know we are missing some big ones here,
so send me your answers for next time!

For those of you who don't feel as if their view was represented
at all, please, e-mail it to me and I'll get it in. Let's try to
keep the debate open. Have a great time!! Till next month,
this is Christina (Poetmuse) signing off. :o)

               DREAMS--THEY COMPLEMENT OUR LIVES...

Hello again, everyone. This is the fiction page. I would like it
to be an open and fun place for you to offer other Mike Mills fans
your stories, dreams, poems or any other type of "creative-ness"
you may have. For instance, Heather sent me a couple of her
dreams recently, and we wanted to share them with you.

Dream number 1)
A friend and I were at the bank. It wasn't really a
bank because there were CD's and stuff there, but I was depositing
a check and there were bank tellers, too. We were standing in
line and I noticed the arms of the person in front of me. I
didn't know who he was, but he had really nice arms! Somehow he
noticed me and said, "hi." It was Mike Mills! A young Mike Mills
-- like 19 (that way, he wouldn't be too old for me). Anyway,
Bill was with him and Bill noticed my friend. The next thing I
know, we are at someone's house sitting on the floor and talking.
(some of the details from here are "choppy"). Mike had his arm
around me and we were frying something in the kitchen (this
kitchen part really isn't important). Anyway, we were about to
smooch, when my roommate slammed the door and woke me up!!

Dream number 2)
I was at an outdoor concert in downtown Buffalo. It was
a small group in the audience and R.E.M. was on stage. I was with
my father, brother, and my music teacher (go figure). We were
kind of towards the back of the crowd, so I was standing on top of
the hill so I could see. I looked up at the stage and realized
that the concert was over, but I had lost my father, brother, and
music teacher! So, I just stood there and waited. The next thing
I know, Mike Mills comes up to me and asks if I'm Heather. And of
course, because I knew who he was, I said "YES." He told me my
family was looking for me and I was to go with him. Of course I
didn't hesitate. He took me to a car where my father and everyone
were waiting for me. We both got in the car and drove off. I
don't know where we went or anything!

"Well, those are my wonderful sleeping experiences. If I have
anymore, I'll share them with you!" ---Heather

I was hoping to have a little poem composed for here, but since my
muse is on vacation this month, it will have to wait. If anyone
has ANY ideas or more dreams for the fiction page, please e-mail
them to me. I'll leave you with these "immortal" words-----> from
Green
"This world is big, and so awake
I stayed up late to hear your voice
This light is here--to keep you warm
This song is here--to keep you strong...." untitled song # 11

Till next time--happy dreaming. Christina :o)

THOUGHTS ON THE TOUR THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN

I had the ticket for almost a year here. I wasn't more looking
forward to anything than the concert. And then... this... I am
very sad about it. My friends and I went to the Ekko (Cultural
Centre in Utrecht) Friday (we had tickets for that Friday), in
black clothes. I painted on my T-shirt 'Pray 4 Bill.' Wild ideas
got hold of us. We should go to Hamburg or Berlin (Germany) and
attend the non-canceled open air show there.

Recently we heard that R.E.M. is playing at a festival in May here
in The Netherlands! A little light in our darkness :-) (Also
dEUs, Offspring etc. are there: more light :-)

I really prayed for him (not a habit of mine). I prayed for him
to get better...

...AND IN RESPONSE TO PARTICULAR ARTICLES

Loved the interview from Flagpole.
                                                        -- Esther

I'd just like to say that R.E.M. wouldn't be the same if Mike
Mills didn't sing backup.
                                                         -- Bryan

I have never met Mike Mills although once I was at the Georgia
Theatre Bar with Bill Berry, talking to the bartender.
                                                         -- Shaun

I met Mike April 5th, 1991 at R.E.M.'s 11th anniversary birthday
party. I ate cake with him (he was the only band member to have
a piece)! I was with my friend Ingrid and he told us of a song
he wrote about a girl named Ingrid called "Rockville."

MIKE MILLS ADDS SALSA TO THE BURRITOS

Every Tuesday night, I drive the 200 mile round trip from
Greenville, SC, to Athens to enjoy the "Hot Burritos" at the
High Hat Blues Bar. The Burritos, Barry Sell and William Tonks,
always throw a great party. I've seen them alone as well as with
the assorted "guest stars" that often appear.
Tuesday night I was late and missed Ben Reynolds
(unfortunately), but was thrilled to see the musician for whom I
have the most respect and admiration in the world, Mike Mills,
standing at the bar. From the top of his shaggy long hair to the
tips of his black and white high top Converse tennis shoes, Mike
was a picture of comfortable bohemianism. His little round
glasses, a striped tunic and jeans and an assortment of silver
jewelry only added to the effect.
I was thrilled to see Mike take the stage with Barry and
William and pal Richard Grant. With William on dobro, Barry on
mandolin, Richard on drums and Mike on acoustic guitar, the
quartet rolled through a varied assortment of covers; everything
from CCR's "Lodi" to Merle Haggard's "Okie From Muscogee." The
highlight of the show for this fan was Mike's version of "Don't
Go Back to Rockville"--a real credit to both his songwriting
and his singing abilities.
After the show, I was fortunate enough to get to do something
few fans get a chance to; I was able to sit around and just chat
with Mike, William, Barry and various pals. I was struck once
again by just how unpretentious and genuinely nice musicians are
in this town. Barry and William are always friendly and fun to
talk to, and Mike turned out to be one of those rare finds; a
famous musician who really is mature and confident enough just
to be a regular guy. He is articulate, friendly and very easy
to talk to.
I didn't attempt to interview Mike at all, even though I
understand interviews with him can be a bit rare to come by. I
really just wanted to get to know him outside the R.E.M.
atmosphere, and I wasn't disappointed. We chatted about various
subjects, from working to life in general, and the only R.E.M.
question that came up was how Bill was doing. (Fine, thanks).
Even though he didn't know me before that night (and I acted a bit
like the fan I am), he treated me with respect, courtesy and a
healthy dose of humor. Before meeting him, I liked him for
all the obvious musical and viewpoint reasons; now I like him
most for just being a wonderful, normal guy.
Thanks, Mike, for being everything I always believed you
were and wanted you to be.
