These are the Bill Berry updates from MTV News : 3/21/95 On Tuesday March 21st, R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry was released from a Swiss hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery on March third. Doctors successfully clipped off an aneurysm on the surface of Berry's brain, which had ruptured during a concert. Berry will now embark on a 3-week period of doctor-prescribed rest and recuperation. R.E.M. spokespeople say that, out of concern that Berry be allowed to continue recovering in peace, will not reveal whether he's still in Europe, or on his way back home. R.E.M. is expected to announce updated tour plans in the next few weeks; its US dates are scheduled to launch May 5th in Phoenix. 3/16/95 R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry is continuing his recovery after brain surgery March 3 in Switzerland. Band spokespeople had told us on Wednesday that his prognosis continued to look good, although he's still experiencing intense headaches and some swelling. Berry underwent an emergency craniotomy on Friday, March 3rd, after suffering a ruptured aneurysm on the surface of his brain during a show in Lausanne, Switzerland 2 days earlier. No internal bleeding was reported, and we're told none of Berry's brain or bodily functions were affected. R.E.M. has canceled all of its scheduled European tour dates through April 20th -- and spokespeople say that, as they focus on Berry's continued recovery, they haven't even begun to ponder the fate of US. dates, scheduled to start May 5th in Phoenix. Box 8032 Athens, GA 30603 3/6/95 R.E.M.'s office reports that drummer Bill Berry is "relaxing" in a Swiss Hospital, recuperating from an emergency craniotomy last Friday. Berry suffered a hemorrhage on the surface of his brain during a show in Lausanne, on Wednesday night. A spokesperson for the group said quote, "We couldn't ask for things to be going any better after a surgery like this." The rest of the group was still in Switzerland giving Berry moral support. The R.E.M. tour has been postponed indefinitely, and all the European indoor dates have been canceled, while Berry is on the mend. Warner music in Europe says that the late June and early July outdoor and stadium dates will take place as scheduled. 3/5/95 MTV Europe reports that R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry is resting comfortably in a Swiss hospital, after suffering a ruptured aneurysm in his brain during a show. 90 minutes into the concert at the Lausanne's Patinoire Wednesday night, Berry was stricken by a migraine and was taken to the hospital. As Joey Peters, the drummer from Grant Lee Buffalo finished up R.E.M.'s set, Berry underwent an emergency craniotomy to clip off the aneurysm, which was on the right hand surface of his brain. There was no internal bleeding reported, and Berry, 36, is expected to remain in the hospital for the next week to ten days. Doctors said that none of his brain or body functions have been affected, and he may return to drumming in two to three weeks. But the R.E.M. tour has been postponed for the foreseeable future. R.E.M.'s office released a statement which said, in part, quote: "Bill is in good hands and good spirits and is expected to make a full and speedy recovery, for which we are all most thankful."
