What is the function of repetition in a work of art?

What do artists do to keep your eyes moving all around a work of art? They use repetition.

Artists can repeat:

Usually, an artist will vary the kinds of colors, lines, and shapes a little while still making them similar enough to be familiar.

Repetition gives an artwork rhythm. Some artwork has a fast, busy rhythm. Other art works have a quieter rhythm.
