What is the purpose of pattern in a work of art?

Some artists create patterns in their art by repeating a shape over and over again.

Elements of a Pattern

To do a pattern, you need:

  1. A Shape - an important shape that is repeated is sometimes called a motif
  2. A Grid

You can have the same shape and a different grid or different shapes on the same grid. To make things more interesting you can have variety in your patterns. Look for examples in the paintings.
