What is Balance in a Work of Art?

Balance is the way shapes are arranged to create a design which is pleasing to look at.

Types of Balance

Balance does not always mean that the work of art has to be even or not lopsided.
There is:

  1. Symmetrical Balance: Example "when an art work is the same on both sides."
  2. Asymmetrical Balance: Example"when the art work is arranged so that the two sides are not the same but the visual weight looks pleasing to your eye." [Link to Image Not Available.]

It is a matter of feeling. Don't put too much logic into it!

Note to Teacher: The work shown as an example of asymmetrical balance was that in the January offering of Sam Gilliam, 1933-, Open Cylinder, 1979 from the NMAA. However, the link to the image is not available.
